The Simon Bolivar Foundation and Baylor University offer training scholarships to Venezuelan doctors

Citgo’s Simon Bolivar Foundation says it maintains an alliance with Baylor University College of Medicine, through which Venezuelan doctors can receive training.

“Up to seven scholarships are being offered to fund medical professionals working in Venezuela to obtain a world-class diploma in tropical medicine from the Baylor National School of Tropical Medicine,” the organization said in a statement.

He added that the Francisco Antonio Risquez National Academy of Medicine (FANM) will play a key role in helping the institution disseminate information to potential scholarship candidates in the country.

He noted that “in addition to developing an objective process to identify eligible candidates who will be recommended to apply for a scholarship from Baylor College of Medicine for the Tropical Medicine Diploma Programme.”

“We see this collaboration as a first step toward a long-term, strategic and mutually beneficial relationship with the Baylor School of Medicine and the Francisco Antonio Risquez National Foundation of Medicine.” So said Mariela Beaulio, president of the Simon Bolivar Foundation.

He added that this charitable program provides training for medical professionals in Venezuela, given the loss of health professionals in the country and the need to rebuild capacity.

“At the same time, it provides a two-way channel for knowledge transfer. I am particularly pleased with the valuable collaboration that the National Academy of Medicine of Venezuela will provide in identifying candidates who will be recommended to apply for a scholarship for the Diploma of Tropical Medicine Programme.”

The Tropical Medicine Diploma includes an intensive, non-degree online four-month program designed for clinicians. It consists of four modules dealing with epidemiology, public health, tropical bacteriology and virology, tropical parasitology and mycology, travel applications and tropical medicine through webinars.

This program will develop the skills necessary for health professionals to work in the field of tropical medicine. It will prepare them for a Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler Health,” the foundation said.

He noted that by meeting the objectives of the program, candidates will be able to describe the principles and management of childhood diseases, reproductive health, and current approaches to address the health needs of women and children, apply different clinical subspecialties focused on the tropics and discuss the differential diagnosis of returning travelers with fever or eosinophilia .

He stressed that “all this is in line with the foundation’s charitable mission to develop capabilities to help those in dire need in this field.”

Applicants must submit their medical credentials, three letters of recommendation, and an essay on their motivation for obtaining this diploma. They must have sufficient English language skills to successfully complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

The scholarship application process will start in June 2022 and will end in September 2022. Classes will start in January 2023.

The Simón Bolívar Foundation, in collaboration with the National Academy of Medicine, will issue an invitation to potential candidates, and will identify eligible candidates to recommend their applications for the Baylor College of Medicine Scholarship for a Diploma in Tropical Medicine Programme. Once selected candidates submit their applications, Baylor College of Medicine will have the final decision on admission to the program based on its selection criteria.”
